Ischitella: a small jewel

From the heart of this land, linked to its traditional and farming roots, rises Ischitella, a simple gem, ideal for those who love peace and the sweet melodies of natural life.

It rises on the hills that lead to Lake Varano, with a look that ranges over a broad valley, where the  stream Romantado outlines its course. Surrounded by olive trees and dipped in the colours of the Mediterranean vegetation, it is possible to enjoy an enchanting view from the old town centre. This view reaches up the profiles of the hills overlooking the Adriatic Sea, the Tremiti Islands up to the isthmus of the Lake Varano.

In some days, when the air is clear and the sky blue smooth, one can enjoy an endless view upon the Adriatic coast of Molise and Abruzzo; on the other hand, looking toward the east one may be lucky enough to see the Dalmatian coast.

The old town holds two treasures. One is called "La Terra" and comprise the ancient palaces of Ischitella, while the other one is the "Rione Ponte", born at a later time than the first one.

Ischitella still preserves part of the fortress of the city, probably of Swabian origin. It is also possible to visit the church of St. Eustachio, the Decata palace and the convent which houses the "Cypress of St. Francis". There is a famous legend related to it, which tells that the cypress rose from a brother's stick knocked into the ground.
Another beauty absolutely worth visiting is St. Pietro in Cuppis, the abbey situated just outside the urban centre. On Lake Varano is situated the Church of the Cross, where once stood the medieval village of Bayranum, whose only remains are the two towers near Torre Varano.
