Lake Varano
With its 60.5 square kilometers, Lake Varano is the largest lake in southern Italy. It enjoys a particularly scenic beauty and is rich in wildlife.
Separated from the sea by a tongue of sand 10 km long, where sinuous dunes sunbathe in the thick forests of pine, eucalyptus and lentiscus, it interweaves with salt water through the opening of two channels, respectively called Foce Varano and Foce Capoiale.
The lake water is enriched through the flooding in of underwater springs: fresh water flowing in from the heart of the mountains of Cagnano Varano. Famous for eels fishing, it once had the charm of an inlet which was then closed because of a strong storm that submerged the town of Varano.
This natural wonder snatched from the sea is called lake, but is more precisely defined lagoon.
